Being a disabled single mother it’s extremely difficult to make ends meet so the Food for Families food bank Is a wonderful service for me. I’ve been introduced to veggies that were unfamiliar to me but so nutritious. I had no idea what Kale was until we received it at the food bank and were taught about in the Community Kitchen – it’s now a staple in my diet. – Nadia
The Food for Families food bank is part of the Food for Families program, which combines a weekly nutritious food bank with a nutrition and food security education program called the EduKitchen.
The Food for Families food bank is premised on the belief that insufficient nutrition perpetuates the many victimizing cycles of poverty and that all families deserve access to excellent and nourishing food choices.
We offer uncompromisingly wholesome food with as much fresh food as possible in our food bank, with recipes and preparation tips related to the food given. We strive for our foods to be local and organic. The majority of our participants are single parents, but our program also includes two parent or intergenerational families that are living at or below the poverty line. We now serve over 200 families on a weekly basis.
Each week families receive an assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables. Beyond fresh foods, families will also receive a starch such as bread, rice, pasta, or whole grains; a protein such as fish, legumes, or yogurt, and other foods such as healthy snacks, baby food, or baking supplies.
For more information on the Food for Families program, please contact the Program Coordinator, Laura Albert at 604-254-2489 or via email at: LauraA@cityreach.org
Food for Families thrives on the help of volunteers and in-kind donors of food and other products. Please contact Laura if you wish to assist in either of these areas.
